​​​​​​​​​Welcome to Grade 11 at Morden Collegiate!  Whether you are a returning grade 10 student or new to our school, below you will find information about courses that are available to for you to register for in your grade 11 year.

Course Descriptions

Courses will be listed below in two categories; Core courses (required by the province in order to receive your Manitoba High School Diploma) and Optional courses (courses you elect to take based on your interests and career or post-secondary education goals).  Optional courses are available based on teacher availability and number of registrations and are not guaranteed based on schedule conflicts and availability.

We will schedule an information evening for parents and new students as well as host an information session for current grade 10's prior to the course selection process each year.  Information is also available at that time regarding scheduling “spares" into student schedules.

There are three Mathematics options to choose from to achieve the required Mathematics credit.  Students may select more than one.  Only one will count as the required course and any additional courses will count as optional courses.

Applied Mathematics

Description: 

Grade 11 Applied Mathematics is intended for students considering post-secondary studies that do not require theoretical calculus.  It builds upon the foundation knowledge and skills from Grade 10 Introduction to Pre-Calculus and Applied Mathematics and builds a foundation for Grade 12 Applied Mathematics.

Essentials in Mathematics is a practical and engaging course designed for students who want to develop useful math skills for everyday life and future careers.  This course focuses on real-world applications, including managing finances, budgeting, geometry, and statistics.  It is perfect for students who prefer hands-on learning and want to strengthen their problem-solving skills in practical situations.  If you enjoy working with numbers in a way that connects to daily life, business, and various trades, essentials in mathematics are the right choice for you!

Pre-Calculus Mathematics

Description: 

This course is a continuation of the Introduction to Applied and Pre-Calculus Mathematics program and is designed for students who intend to study Calculus and related Mathematics as part of their post-secondary education.  This course comprises, primarily, a high level study of theoretical mathematics with an emphasis on problem solving, mental mathematics, as well as cumulative exercises and testing.  Students are required to learn mathematical concepts through practice and regular homework.  Many of the exercises and problems are expected to be original or different from those presented in class.

 

Regular class work is an important component of evaluation.  Classroom and homework assignments are an important part of this course.

 

​Ce cours est une continuation du programme d'introduction aux mathématiques pré-calcul et appliquées et est créer spécifiquement pour les élèves avec l'intention d'étudier le calcul infinitésimal et les mathématiques relier comme partie de leur éducation post-secondaire. Ce cours se comprend de, principalement, un haut niveau d'étude des mathématiques théoriques avec un emphase sur la résolution des problèmes, les calculs mentales, ainsi que les exercices cumulatifs et les évaluations. Description: 

This English course balances practical and artistic purposes and uses of language. Because the course is “comprehensive", we will divide our study equally between pragmatic and aesthetic texts. Students will learn to think critically and independently while developing their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing. Students will become increasingly proficient in using language to communicate effectively to an audience, express themselves clearly, and select appropriate forms for their purposes. They will learn to manage data and information efficiently, and to work collaboratively in small groups.  Students will produce and explore oral, written, and visual texts that inform, persuade, analyze, foster understanding and empathy, reflect culture, express feelings and experiences, and bring enjoyment. Literature studies will include short stories, novels, non-fiction, poetry, contemporary drama, visual text, and film.  This course includes a Final Process Exam (Standards Assessment).

Description:

English literature invites students to explore the power and beauty of language through a variety of literary forms, including  drama, short stories, novels, poetry, and nonfiction. Through close reading, discussion, and creative expression, students will analyze how language shapes meaning, evokes emotion, and reflects diverse human experiences. A key focus of the course is on the artistry of storytelling and how writers use literary techniques to craft compelling narratives. Students will engage with texts from different time periods and cultures, developing a deeper appreciation for the written word and its ability to inspire, challenge, and transform perspectives.

As students study the works of literary masters, they will also experiment with their own writing, using language to express their thoughts, ideas, and emotions. Through creative writing, personal responses, and analytical essays, they will refine their ability to communicate effectively and with purpose. This course fosters critical thinking, discussion, and interpretation while encouraging students to see literature as more than just words on a page—it is an art form that connects us to one another and the world around us. Whether through crafting original pieces or analyzing the works of others, students will discover that literature is both a reflection of life and a means of creative expression. Transactional Focus

Description: 

Transactional English is an umbrella term that covers many different nonfiction reading and writing genres, emphasizing the practical purposes and uses of language. Because the course is “transactional", we will focus our study (70%) on pragmatic texts. Students will learn to think critically and independently while developing their skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing. Students will become increasingly proficient in using language and learn how to employ rhetorical appeals (ethos/logos/pathos) and techniques to communicate effectively to an audience, express themselves clearly, and select appropriate forms for their purposes. Students will learn to manage data and information efficiently, and to work collaboratively in small groups.  Students will produce and explore oral, written, and visual texts that inform, persuade, analyze, foster understanding and empathy, reflect culture, express feelings and experiences, and bring enjoyment. Literature studies will include memoirs (group and independent study), non-fiction, poetry, speeches, visual text, and documentary film.  This course includes a Final Process Exam (Standards Assessment).

Langue et communication​ (required for the French Immersion diploma)

Description:  

Students will continue to refine their oral and written French with the intention of fully respecting basic grammatical conventions in both contexts, thus building confidence and a bilingual identity. Students will learn how to alter texts to generate effects, change the tone, render a text more (or less) subjective. Students will revisit figurative language and elements of style, also when to use different levels of formality.

Evaluation of this course will include quizzes, evaluations of daily use of French, oral presentations, a book report, poetry writing, short story writing and opinion essay writing.

Les étudiants continueront à affiner leur français oral et écrit dans l'intention de respecter pleinement les conventions grammaticales de base dans les deux contextes, renforçant ainsi leur confiance et leur identité bilingue. Les élèves apprendront à modifier les textes pour produire des effets, changer le ton, rendre un texte plus (ou moins) subjectif. Les étudiants revisiteront le langage figuratif et les éléments de style, ainsi que quand utiliser différents niveaux de formalité.

Description:

History of Canada 30F allows students to focus on the history of Canada from pre-contact times to the present. Through this process students become historically literate and better able to understand the Canada of today.

Regular Delivery

Description: 

Grade 11 PE is a course designed to instill ownership of healthy lifestyle choices and physical activity for all students.  Students are expected to participate in activities that provide insight into future options for activity outside of high school.  Health components accompany physical activity opportunities in this course which students must complete to achieve course credit.  Each health unit is based on preparing students to be healthy in the next phase of their lives.  This course is uniquely graded, where students WILL NOT receive a percentage.  Students must meet the expectations of both health and activity classes to achieve a COMPLETE course grade.  All students who do not satisfy the requirements of this course are designated as INCOMPLETE.

Fitness and Wellness Focus

Description:

​The Fitness & Wellness course is designed to support students in developing greater ownership of personal physical fitness. The majority of physical activity takes place in the fitness centre where students have ample opportunity to work on their self-directed fitness goals and specific plans. In addition, students will study health topics related to their wellbeing that include training principles and fitness management, mental-emotional health, and analysis of personal fitness data.

This course is uniquely graded, where students WILL NOT receive a percentage.  Students must meet the expectations of both health and activity classes to achieve a COMPLETE course grade.  All students who do not satisfy the requirements of this course are designated as INCOMPLETE.

This course meets the requirement as a compulsory full-credit course required for Grade 11 Physical Educaiton.​

2-D Animation & 3-D Modelling

Description:

This course combines two half-credit courses—2D Animation 35S and 3D Modelling 35S—into a full-credit course. For Animation, students learn how to produce two-dimensional animated short films by designing storyboards, frames, and keyframes. For Modelling, students create detailed three-dimensional models in Blender and learn how to animate those models using their understanding of keyframes. Programs used throughout the course include Krita, Photoshop, After Effects, Blender, and DaVinci Resolve. Additional topics include: the history of animation; developing a critical analysis of existing animated works; and storytelling structure & techniques. Overall, students develop their original creative voice, artistic skills, and ability to independently manage a long-form creative project.​

Description:

How many scientists, mathematicians, poets, and historians do you know? Accountants are consistently among one of the top 10 highest paid in-demand jobs in Canada. This course will provide students with the skills to complete the accounting cycle, keeping accurate and neat accounting records, and financial statements.

Band

Description:
The Grade 11 band course challenges students to further refine their musicianship through the study and performance of complex wind band repertoire. Building on prior knowledge, students will advance their technical skills, deepen their understanding of music theory, and expand their historical awareness of different musical styles and traditions. Greater emphasis will be placed on leadership within the ensemble, personal musical expression, and the ability to interpret and convey musical ideas with confidence. Students will develop a greater sense of artistry, preparing them for advanced performance opportunities.

Concerts, festivals, trips, and retreats are considered a part of each course, and it is an expectation that all band students participate in these.

​For those students who do not own their instrument, rentals can be coordinated through the band teacher*.

Jazz Band

Course Code: JBA30S

Prerequisite: JBA20S

Description:

In Grade 11 Jazz Band, students will engage with more complex jazz repertoire and further refine their improvisational skills. They will explore advanced jazz harmonies, scales, and forms while developing a deeper understanding of phrasing, articulation, and ensemble dynamics. Greater emphasis will be placed on personal expression, musical spontaneity, and collaborative performance. Students will be encouraged to take on leadership roles within the ensemble, contributing to the musical direction and interpretation of pieces while enhancing their overall musicianship.

Concerts, festivals, trips, and retreats are considered a part of Junior Jazz Band, and it is an expectation that all students participate in these. 

For those students who do not own their instrument, rentals can be coordinated through the band teacher*.

Biology/ Biologie

Description: 

The Biology 30S Curriculum focuses on two main themes; “Wellness and Homeostasis". Students learn the multidimensional aspect of wellness and how the different systems of the body function to maintain homeostasis. The course is divided into the following six units: Wellness and Homeostasis, Digestion and Nutrition, Transportation and Respiration, Excretion and Waste Management, Protection and Control, and Wellness and Homeostatic Changes. The evaluation consists of lab work, project work, daily assignments, tests, and a final exam.

Le curriculum de Biologie 30S fait la mise en point de deux thèmes majeurs; « Bien-être et l’homéostasie ». Les élèves apprennent l’aspect multidimensionnelle de la bien-être et comment les différents systèmes du corps fonctionne pour maintenir l’homéostasie. Ce cours est divisé en six unités: Bien-être et homéostasie, digestion et nutrition, transport et respiration, excrétion et gestion de déchets, protection et contrôle, et bien-être et les changements homéostatiques. Description: 

Physics 30S builds on the theme of motion, which was first introduced in General Science 20F. Students will also examine how forces affect the motion of an object. This will include the impact of mass, charge, and magnetism on an object. Specifically, the topics covered in the course are: Mechanics (Kinematics, Dynamics), Fields (Gravitational Fields, Electric Fields, Magnetic Fields, Electromagnetism), Waves (Waves in One Dimension, Waves in Two Dimensions, Sound), and The Nature of Light (Models, Laws & Theories, The Wave & Particle Model of Light). In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply concepts that were covered in Introduction to Pre-Calculus and Applied Mathematics 20S, including those related to graphing, algebra, and right-angle trigonometry.

​Physique 30S s'appui sur le thême de mouvement, ce qui était premièrement vu en Sciences de la nature 20F. Les élèves vont aussi investiguer comment les forces vont affecter le mouvement d'un objet. Ceci inclus l'impact de la masse, charge et magnétisme d'un objet. Description:

Chemistry 30S continues to develop the concepts and themes introduced in the chemistry clusters of grades 9 and 10 General Science. This course is designed as prerequisite for Chemistry 40S and further postsecondary study in the sciences. It is a rigorous course covering the following topics: Physical Properties of Matter, Gases and the Atmosphere, Chemical Reactions, Solutions, and Organic Chemistry

Description:

Current Topics in Science 30S is a grade 11 course that allows the students to explore different topics in science.  These topics could be from any area within Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or technology related to these subjects.  The specific topics and projects explored are not fixed and may be developed in conjunction with the students' interests.

Career Development

Description: 

The career development curricula have been designed to connect school learning with workplace and labour market realities. The courses will provide a smoother transition between high school graduation and post-secondary choices. These courses will help students acquire and apply knowledge and skills to make appropriate decisions for life, work, and any post-secondary education/training that is required.

Career development is the process of managing life, learning, and work. It means one's whole life, not just one's occupation. The Grade 11 curriculum focuses student learning on personal management skills, life/ work balance, and transition from high school.

Choir

Description: 

Singing is the primary focus of this course. Class time will be spent rehearsing repertoire. We will sing music from many musical genres through which we will improve vocal technique, breath control, vocal blend, balance, tone and expression. Music theory and music history are regular components of our study. Performances at school and community events occur throughout the semester.

Vocal Jazz

Description: 

Vocal Jazz is a performance-based course. Class time is spent rehearsing and studying jazz and contemporary styles of music. The repertoire for this course will encompass different genres of jazz and will have varied levels of difficulty. Throughout the course we will study jazz history and theory, with a focus on appropriate blend, balance, vocal color and microphone technique. There may be a need for independent practice outside of class time. Travel and festival attendance are a regular part of the course.​

Textile Arts and Design

Description:

This dynamic and creative course allows students the freedom to choose their own projects, helping them develop and refine their personal skill levels in textile design and construction. Whether focusing on garment making, fabric art, or textile-based crafts, students will be encouraged to push their creativity and craftsmanship further.

The course has a strong artistic component, providing opportunities to experiment with a variety of textile art forms, such as embroidery, fabric manipulation, and mixed-media textiles. Students will explore creative costuming, cultural fashion design, and the impact of consumer practices on individuals and communities.

Beyond hands-on creation, this course follows the fashion industry through design and illustration, marketing, and merchandising, giving students insight into the business and artistic sides of fashion. Students will also critically examine the environmental and social justice influences on the industry, exploring sustainability, ethical production, and clothing security within local and global contexts.​

Computer Science

Description:

Computer Science 30S builds upon the foundational concepts of CSC20S by going beyond game development. Students create a website with HTML and CSS, study advanced algorithmic concepts, and complete research projects on historical topics and current issues. Game development remains a large component of the course—students learn the C# programming language by creating 3D video games in Unity and designing game assets in Blender. Overall, students focus on enhancing their capacity for logical thought, collaborative problem-solving, and critical analysis.​

Description:

Dramatic Arts 30S is a dynamic, hands-on course that builds on foundational drama skills, encouraging students to further develop their imagination, interpretation, and performance abilities. Through active participation, students will refine their aesthetic sensibility, enhance their ability to present themselves confidently on stage and in everyday life, and practice the techniques and discipline required for compelling dramatic presentations. The course focuses on key elements of storytelling, character development, and performance, guiding students in crafting engaging narratives, bringing characters to life through thought, speech, and action, and preparing polished presentations for an audience. In a supportive and creative environment that encourages artistic risk-taking, students will apply critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity to both dramatic work and real-life situations.

English as an Additional Language

Description: 

EAL Literacy courses are classes that support all levels of English learners. The three focus areas of this course are developing everyday vocabulary, building community, and developing English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Family Studies

Description: 

This grade 11 course is for students interested in the child care/teaching/child development/ or health care fields. It focuses on the developmental stages of childhood from birth to age 12 as well as changes, challenges, and care throughout pregnancy and the parenting of young children. Students are expected to do a variety of projects and presentations and, most importantly, spend practicum days throughout the semester working in community daycares or early years classrooms. While out on the practicum placements students will act as an extra set of hands while helping their supervisors, interacting with young children.

 

Almost half of the final mark is based on the effort and responsibility shown during the practicum experience and learning experiences provided by community presenters. Because of this a positive, energetic, and open minded attitude is essential to enjoying the course and growing through it.

Description:

Let's look towards the future. Are you planning to move out in the next couple years and need to improve your personal culinary skills? How much does food really cost? Is our food system sustainable for future generations? This course takes a critical look at where food comes from, how food costs affect what we eat, and how to budget for food. It also dives deeper into food safety and foodborne illnesses for a well-rounded understanding of safety in the kitchen. The course is a combination of theoretical in class work and hands-on practical cooking labs in the kitchen setting.

French communication and culture (for non french immersion students)

Description:

Over the four years of coursework, students will be expected to communicate orally and interact spontaneously. They will listen in order to understand the communicated message. Students will plan and write coherent texts to communicate the message. Students will read a variety of texts, for various purposes, and demonstrate understanding orally, in writing or visually. The focus of class time will be oral communication then reading and writing. Students are assessed according to message, fluency and accuracy.

Students will be further introduced to French culture through literature, television and film.  Topics and themes that may be covered include culture, discrimination, poverty and immigration.  This course will also look at biographies, newspaper articles and current events.

Evaluation of this course will include a variety of methods; short quizzes, projects, assignments, oral presentations and a final project.

Description:

Graphic Arts 30S is an intermediate level course focused on training students to become capable graphic designers—they practice and study prerequisite skills and concepts at an increasingly detailed level. Additional skills and concepts include photographic composition, exposure, typography, and career research; in addition to using Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, students learn how to animate graphics in After Effects and DaVinci Resolve. Products created are primarily logo designs, magazines, book layouts, and movie posters; the final product is a high-quality graphic design portfolio. Overall, students are focused on becoming more detail-oriented graphic designers while creating illustrative designs that respond to real-world scenarios and needs.

Technical Theatre

Description:

TTP30/40s is a practical, hands-on course that immerses students in the behind-the-scenes world of theatre production, where they are responsible for the artistic aspects of a show. Students will dive into key production areas such as lighting, sound, stage construction, set painting, house management, marketing, and stage management. They will engage in practical projects, including light and sound design , costume design, set construction and prop creating, applying their creativity and technical skills to bring productions to life. As part of the course, students will take ownership of these artistic elements, ensuring they align with the overall vision of the show. In addition to learning about the tools and equipment used in professional theatres, students will explore various career paths within the theatrical arts, gaining an understanding of the structure of Canadian professional theatre. The course fosters teamwork, creative problem-solving, and project management skills—valuable competencies for success both in theatre and other career fields.


Theatre Production

Description:

This class will meet outside of the school day in both semesters, until the completion of the show in the Spring This is a practical course involving the rehearsal and production of theatre and a show. The course will include rehearsal techniques, script analysis and practical experience in design, technical theatre and stage management.  The course will culminate in a public performance.  The course will be taught in our state of the art, flexible theatre space. This course will be supported by our technicians and design teams from our Backstage Theatre class.

Visual Arts

Course Code: VAR30S

Prerequisite: VAR10S and VAR20S are recommended

Materials: 2B, 4B, 6B pencils, an eraser and a standard sized thick sketchbook

Description:

The focus of this course is creative problem-solving through visual representation.

Using the technical skills and knowledge of art history gained in VAR10s and VAR20S, students will conceive, plan, problem-solve and execute creative and original artworks. Artistic risk-taking is encouraged. These projects will be theme-based and incorporate a variety of media. Students will participate in a student show at the PHAC in which students from several local schools create art on a common theme.
All major projects will be displayed at the Artstravaganza in June.

Description:

The grade 11 Woodworking Technology course is based around each individual students' interests. Students select and design their own individual course of study from the following areas.   Mechanical drafting, Computer Aided Design, CADD, Aspire, Solid Works, CNC programing, 3D modeling, Laser Engraving and Woodworking.    Each student will be required to complete one mandatory woodworking project at the beginning of the course.

Description: 

This course is designed around creating the MCI yearbook. Through Adobe InDesign, students will learn how to properly design and layout yearbook spreads. After students have learned the layout basics, they will have creative freedom when choosing fonts and colour styles. Students will learn about organization, responsibility, and meeting deadlines. Students will become comfortable with selling to clients and photography. Photography and editing digital photographs using Adobe Lightroom will also be covered.​
